We are the French Ladies, that’s what they call us at the Ronald McDonald House Ottawa! We came together at retirement in 2023 and have been volunteering at the House ever since.
This wonderful place offers a temporary ‘home away from home’ to families with very sick children. The House stands across the road from the children’s hospital which makes it convenient after long days at the hospital.
The “Home for Dinner” program offers home cooked meals prepared by volunteers such as the French Ladies. Imagine the weight of having to prepare a simple meal when all your energy is with your child. This program provides comfort to families in terms of nutritional meals prepared with them in mind.
We feel so grateful to be able to help this way. Ronald McDonald House Ottawa has 36 suites and most of the time it is fully booked, which means we are cooking for 45 to 60 people at any given meal. Of course, our labour is free, but there is a monetary cost for the ingredients, and the cost of food keeps going up.
